Target Real Estate Facts
New Stores
We identify potential new store opportunities in trade areas that are underserved or have the potential for new population growth. We analyze extensive data on existing stores’ performance, demographics, competition and market potential to identify areas that would be well-served by a new Target store.
Throughout our new store development process, we partner closely with local officials and citizen groups to ensure we build stores that are sensitive to the needs of each community.

We currently build two different types of stores:
-
Our general merchandise stores feature a blend of everyday essentials including household products, electronics, clothing, an assortment of food and seasonal merchandise. Each general merchandise store employs 150-250 team members and is approximately 128,000 square feet in size.
-
Our SuperTarget stores offer everything found in a general merchandise store, but also include amenities such as a full grocery selection, fresh produce, bakery and deli. SuperTarget is also a certified organic produce retailer. Each SuperTarget store employs 200-300 team members and is approximately 186,000 square feet in size.
While our general merchandise and SuperTarget prototypes have been optimized to best serve most communities, our unique store designs—such as an elevated single-level store—enable us to have a presence in densely populated urban markets.
Target opens new stores at three different times throughout the year—in March, July and October—and we’ll typically confirm plans for a new store within one year of the scheduled opening. Our stores typically take nine to 12 months to build.
Remodels
As part of Target’s commitment to our guests, we reinvest in our existing stores through our remodel program. Our remodel program ensures our older stores reflect our current prototype standards and latest merchandise assortments, allowing us to deliver an up-to-date shopping experience to our guests.
When considering remodel candidates, we evaluate factors including the age of the store, the length of time since its last remodel and store sales volume.
Rebuilds
In addition to reinvesting in existing stores through remodels, Target also completely replaces some stores with brand-new stores. Through this rebuild program, we raze an existing store then reuse the land by constructing a new store on the same site.
We own approximately 85 percent of the buildings and land on which we operate our stores. This ownership allows us to control initial store design and construction, as well as facilitate reinvestment in our current stores.
Relocations
Target may close one store location and then reopen a new store nearby (usually within the same trade area) through a simultaneous relocation. We close the existing store at end of business one day and open the new store at the start of business the following morning. With this schedule, there is no lapse in employment—we work to employ all team members at the existing store at the new location—or interruption in the shopping experience for area guests.
Closings
Occasionally, Target may decide to close a store based on careful consideration of the long-term economic viability of that specific location.
