Thomas O'Brien Biography

An accomplished interior designer and the founder of Aero Studios, Thomas O'Brien is at heart a shopkeeper who collects, produces, and stocks items to make domestic life more beautiful.

Based in New York City's downtown SoHo arts neighborhood, O'Brien divides his design practice among three areas: creating interiors for select clients-both residential and commercial; running his own store, Aero; and designing a wide range of products for the home, including a growing range of national product partnerships through the Thomas O'Brien™ label. Conceived as a "studio," and guided by the principles of a discerning merchant, his company exposes the mechanisms of design through outlets spanning from private to public. O'Brien's collaboration with Target, dubbed Vintage Modern, represents his enthusiasm for great home style.

Central to O'Brien's design philosophy is the coupling of different eras and themes, funneled through a distinctive filter of modernism. Twentieth century to traditional, elegant to casual, practical to fanciful: all work in combination rather than isolation. O'Brien addresses the full arc of decoration, from what people seek for their homes to how they will live with their possessions; a course that stems directly from his own life as a collector and homemaker.

In 2008, Thomas O'Brien expands his Vintage Modern collection with new luxury-laden linens and bath coordinates. For Target, O'Brien's trademark neutral patterns, pale colors and dark woods are translated into a coordinated collection of furniture, linens, and décor that can easily be added to existing rooms, or paired with other pieces from the line.

Thomas O'Brien was born in 1961 in upstate New York. He received his BFA from The Cooper Union in New York City in 1986. He lives in Manhattan and in Bellport, New York.
