Michael Graves Biography

Michael Graves has been one of America’s preeminent architects and designers for 40 years.  The recipient of the National Medal of Arts and the American Institute of Architects’ Gold Medal, he has been at the forefront of architecture and design since founding his practice in Princeton, NJ in 1964.

By integrating architecture, interior design, product design and graphic design, his unique practice has developed a powerful lifestyle brand with an impressive portfolio of projects throughout the world.  His design practice, Michael Graves Design Group, has created products that range from building components to consumer products for home and office, including Michael Graves Design™ for Target.

The Michael Graves Design collection for Target represents the shared belief that people instinctively appreciate great design, and that it should be affordable and accessible to all.  The partnership was forged during the restoration of the Washington Monument in 1998, when Target enlisted Graves to design visually appealing exterior scaffolding, as well as the aesthetically pleasing interior observation and educational areas that visitors continue to enjoy today.

The success of the Washington Monument collaboration sparked the idea that even basic items used everyday could feature great design, resulting in the exclusive collection of Graves-designed products for the home now featured in Target Stores.  The Michael Graves Design collection provides a balance of form and function—sensible and sublime, practical and whimsical—and today includes more than 1,000 products ranging from chess sets to cleaning tools.

A native of Indianapolis, Graves received his architectural education at the University of Cincinnati, Harvard University and the American Academy in Rome.
