As Crew Chief, Ricky’s responsibility at both the race shop in Indianapolis and at the race track is to ensure everything required by the engineering staff is on Scott Dixon’s no. 9 Target car.
“My goal is very simple,” says Ricky. “My job is to make sure we build and prepare the car properly. If the car runs all day and finishes without any mechanical problems then I’ve had a good day. Is there such thing as a perfect car? I’m not sure. We are always striving for that. We always want to put together a great car and make it faster than everyone else’s.”
The challenge as crew chief is not only making sure everything runs smoothly mechanically and done in time at the track and in the race shop, but to get everyone working together, to bring out the best in his qualified crew and managing the personalities to achieve the team goals.
Ricky Davis began his racing career at age seven in quarter midgets with his brother. Influenced by his father, Ricky continued with racing but moved out of the cockpit and into the toolbox when he became a mechanic for Vince Granitelli in 1990. Davis joined Target Chip Ganassi Racing in 1995 and led the No. 9 Target to the championship as crew chief with Scott Dixon.
Born in Washington, DC, Davis now makes his home in Indianapolis.
