Multicultural: Hispanic Initiatives

Target and the Hispanic Community

Target is committed to serving the needs of the Hispanic community and is dedicated to supporting Hispanic heritage, culture and traditions. Through artistic, cultural and educational sponsorships, Target helps strengthen families and the communities they live in. The diverse accomplishments and cultural richness of the Hispanic community are celebrated at Target through the support of cultural organizations and programs across the country.

Reaching the Hispanic Guest
Target acknowledges the savvy of the Hispanic guest and readily shares news - in English and Spanish - about new merchandise of interest to the Hispanic guest and Target’s community involvement. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month last year, Target created a website which honored the heritage, culture and spirit of the Hispanic community. In addition, Target sponsored the 20th Anniversary Hispanic Heritage Awards and several community-focused events.

Target supports Latin music through the sponsorship of a variety of Hispanic musical programs throughout the year that showcase many talented Latino artists. Current and past national music sponsorships include the 2007 Billboard Latin Music Conference and Awards, Premios Juventud, Premios Tu Música, Premios de la Gente and Nuestra Navidad, a Christmas special in partnership with Univision network.

Giving to the Hispanic Community
Target gives back more than $3 million a week through grants and special programs that support education, the arts, and safe families and communities. Target supports performing arts by funding dance festivals, theater events and musical performances including the The National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, GALA Hispanic Theatre and Latin American Youth Center in Washington, D.C., Plaza de la Raza in Los Angeles and the Association for Library Service to Children’s Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros, among others.

Target also supports The Sphinx Organization, a national arts organization that helps build diversity in classical music through programs in arts education, awareness and presentation. Target sponsors Sphinx’s Musical Encounters program, which aims to enhance K-12 music education in an effort to increase the participation of Latinos in music schools, as professional musicians and as classical music audiences.

Target awards hundreds of college scholarships annually to deserving students through the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. Target has also been recognized by several national Hispanic publications and organizations for its multicultural initiatives, including “One of the 50 Best Companies for Latinas” by Latina Style Magazine.
