In the scissor - sharp competition of Beverly Hills hair salons, the name Umberto reigns supreme. For the past decade, Umberto has developed a stellar reputation of sustained excellence for both himself and his world-famous Beverly Hills salons. Not only has Hollywood come to respect and demand his expertise, the hair industry also recognizes his innovative talents, with Revlon naming him their “National Style Director” for Fermodyl Interactives in 1988.
After starting out in Syracuse, New York, Umberto opened Guido Umberto in Beverly Hills with a partner in 1977, and launched his own UMBERTO Salon in 1983. A second salon in Beverly Hills was opened soon after. In 1994, Umberto opened the U salon, a quick-service concept for the Beverly Hills market.
Known as a master cutter, Umberto also takes pride in having an encyclopedic knowledge of the chemistry of hair products and processes.
UMBERTO the salon, together with Umberto its owner, has blossomed. Perhaps one reason why a discerning clientele made up of such celebrated names as Natalie Cole, Jack Palance, Patricia Arquette, J Lo, Janet Jackson, Courtney Love and Billy Crystal is loyal to UMBERTO is its emphasis on personal attention. Even with his harried schedule of television show appearances and his hair conventions demonstrations, Umberto spends the majority of his time in the salons making sure the operations run smoothly and that all of his clients receive the personal care they expect and have come to value at UMBERTO.
“The most valuable feature of UMBERTO, is knowing that a customer can walk-in any time and receive full service. This consists of a personal consultation with the customer and myself, and then afterwards matching them up with a top stylist best suited for their personality.”
After the stylist has worked with a client, Umberto or his manger meets again with the client to check their satisfaction with their new style and the stylist. This ensures that if for any reason they wish to work with another stylist, it’s their choice.
Umberto’s philosophy of hair care, his knowledge of hair and his keen eye for the forth-coming trends allow even the most reluctant to be at ease with the master. “People are really terrified, they are threatened by their hair. It’s unbelievable! Hair can do anything for you. It will bend, curl, or go straight. It can do whatever you want it to do. It’s a matter of using proper chemicals, haircuts, body waves and proper color. Women today want an easy, carefree look. Women are afraid to make a change and they needn’t be. It’s good for your ego. It’s fantastic what a hairstyle can do for a woman! It’s your crowing glory! It’s very creative!”
As the National Style Director for Fermodyl Interactive by Revlon (1988), Umberto created and photographed new styles monthly using their products. Twelve times yearly Umberto traveled the country heading conventions and introducing new techniques for hair cutting, permanent waves and styling. He currently designs hairstyles throughout the year for several magazines: Hair Style, Hairdo, Hairstyling, Woman’s Own and Sophisticate Hair.
Umberto attributes a strong degree of his success to being on the “cutting edge” of innovative hair design. Blessed with a warm, outgoing personality, this impeccably dressed “magnetic maestro of style,” most agree, is certainly the personification of success. Notably easygoing and untemperamental, Umberto enjoys cooking Italian dinners for friends and playing golf.
