Minneapolis (July 30, 2007) - Target and the Hearst Teen Network announced the winners of the "Target House Volunteer Contest," a national contest designed to reward eight teen girls who exemplify the true spirit of volunteerism. In addition to seven other winners, local San Francisco, Calif. teen, Lisa Chan, has won the ultimate volunteer prize-a chance to visit Target House for a four-day volunteer trip and participate in a variety of meaningful programs with Target House families.

With more than 100 submissions, the panel of judges from Hearst, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and The Intelligence Group, a market research and trend consulting firm focused on understanding youth consumer culture, selected eight winners based on their responses to three essay questions, commitment to volunteering and giving back to their local communities, leadership position held in her school/community and grade point average. Two former St. Jude patients and Target House residents, 18-year-old Marcela Velente and 16-year-old Hayley Arceneaux, also helped with the selection process.

The "Target House Volunteer Contest," which ran from May 25 through June 22, also sought to empower teen volunteers and provide the winners with a forum to interact with and support their peers. By allowing girls to share their stories and talk about how they work to make a difference in their daily lives, this contest aimed to foster a positive, can-do attitude in young girls across the country. During their trip to Target House July 25 - 28, the girls participated in outdoor field day activities with St. Jude patients and their families, hosted a pirate party that included a scavenger hunt with a buried treasure chest as a prize, volunteered at a Target House pizza party and also toured St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, gaining hands-on volunteer experience as they prepared apartments for new arrivals.

"Volunteerism is something that we truly value at Target, and as a corporation we strive to empower our communities by donating time and resources to countless local projects across the country," said Laysha Ward, vice president, community relations, Target. "It is inspiring to see that many teens are actively volunteering in their communities, and we hope the 'Target House Volunteer Contest' further motivates young girls and all teens to give back and help make a difference. We are honored to reward these eight outstanding contest winners with a trip to Target House, which is sure to be a life-changing experience."

After reflecting on her recent volunteer trip to Target House, Lisa commented, "My favorite part of the trip was both being inspired by the achievements of the other seven winners and by the perseverance of the children at Target House."

Lisa was chosen as one of eight winners nationwide for the "Target House Volunteer Contest" due to her passion for giving back and strong desire to help make a positive difference in her community. Lisa is an exceptional community member, recently starting her own local non-profit organization, The Bay Area Strive, which is run by teens to help provide additional funds for Bay Area public schools in need. Lisa's hope is to encourage youth to expand their educational horizon, which she does by pairing teens and in-need youth to help provide them with the tools to be successful. An honors junior at St. Ignatius College Preparatory School, Lisa is also the editor-in-chief of the school yearbook, distinguished member of the orchestra, and academic representative of the student council. Lisa was also crowned as the 2007 Miss San Francisco Outstanding Teen.

Target House opened in May 1999 as a home-away-from-home for St. Jude patients whose treatments require they be in Memphis 90 days or longer, and their families. In honor of the eighth anniversary of Target House, Target awarded eight outstanding teens with the opportunity to give back on a national scale and show their genuine dedication to helping others in need. Target is committed to giving back to its communities and aims to foster that same spirit in all of its guests and team members.

Minneapolis (July 30, 2007) - Target and the Hearst Teen Network announced the winners of the "Target House Volunteer Contest," a national contest designed to reward eight teen girls who exemplify the true spirit of volunteerism. In addition to seven other winners, local Delmar, N.Y. teen, Chelsea Saulpaugh, has won the ultimate volunteer prize-a chance to visit Target House for a four-day volunteer trip and participate in a variety of meaningful programs with Target House families.

After reflecting on her recent volunteer trip to Target House, Chelsea commented, "The most surprising thing was how active and happy the children were. They don't let their diseases get them down. Still, it's an amazing feeling to be able to bring a smile to a sick child's face."

Chelsea was chosen as one of eight winners nationwide for the "Target House Volunteer Contest" due to her passion for giving back and strong desire to help make a positive impact in her community. Recently, Chelsea volunteered to help clean up a local summer camp through a program called "Hands on Capitaland." Chelsea has also worked with Northwest Career Planning, where she helps physically and mentally disabled people find employment in the community. Believing that making a difference in someone else's life truly makes a difference in her own, Chelsea uses her volunteer experiences as motivation to continue striving for a better community and encouraging others to do the same.

MINNEAPOLIS (May 31, 2007) - Target and The Hearst Teen Network have partnered to launch a national "Target House Volunteer Contest," in search of eight teen girls who exemplify the true heart of volunteerism. From May 25 through June 22, teen girls can enter for a chance to win the ultimate volunteer prize - the opportunity to volunteer at Target House, a long-term housing facility for the families of patients who are receiving life-saving treatment at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Teen girls can log onto Target.com/volunteer to complete an entry form showcasing their commitment to their local communities and the various volunteer initiatives in which they actively participate. A panel of judges from Hearst and The Intelligence Group, a market research and trend consulting firm focused on understanding youth consumer culture, will review the entries and select winners based on established criteria: leadership position within their schools and/or community, GPA, extra-curricular activities and three essay questions. Two former St. Jude patients, 18-year-old Marcela Valente and 16-year-old Hayley Arceneaux, will also help with the selection process.

"At Target, volunteerism is a strong part of our culture, with our team members contributing more than 315,000 hours of their time to more than 7,500 community projects each year," said Laysha Ward, vice president, community relations, Target. "Our team members frequently volunteer at Target House, so we're excited to extend this unique opportunity to our teen guests to reward and encourage their volunteerism efforts."

Target House opened in May 1999 as a home-away-from-home for St. Jude patients whose treatments require they be in Memphis 90 days or longer. Target House provides apartments free-of-charge and enhances the quality of life for its residents, who benefit from the privacy of family apartments, as well as common areas that foster interaction with other Target House families. In honor of the eighth anniversary of Target House, Target will recognize eight outstanding teens with the opportunity to give back on a national scale and show their true dedication to helping others in need. The "Target House Volunteer Contest" also provides teen girls with a new forum to interact with and support their peers in need.

"I will always love Target House," said Hayley Arceneaux, a 15-year-old former patient who lived at Target House while being treated at St. Jude for osteosarcoma. Her cancer is now in remission. "It provided me with a life-long network of strong friendships and a safe haven that I know I can always return to - it became my home-away-from-home. Being a part of the Target House family was a joy, and I am always excited to visit with the families and children and share my own experiences. When I'm at Target House, I feel so loved."

The winners of the contest will be announced in mid-July at www.Target.com/up2d8. The eight winners will be flown to Target House with a parent or guardian on July 25 for a four-day volunteer weekend. The teen guests will undergo relevant training, tour Target House and St. Jude, as well as participate in a variety of meaningful volunteer programs and special activities with Target House families.

"In our research, we've found that teens are volunteering at a growing rate because they feel empowered to help make a difference in the world and feel strongly that corporations have the power to influence and assist consumers to give back as well," said Jane Buckingham, president, Intelligence Group. "Getting involved in local charitable or philanthropic-related efforts is now deemed 'cool' among the teen audience. It's about showing classmates and peers that they too care about changing the world."

In addition to the contest, teen guests can also visit www.Target.com/volunteer and create their own personalized "message of hope" quilt square for the residents of Target House. More than 100 customized quilt squares will be selected to decorate a commemorative quilt with messages from teens across the country. As a long-standing tradition, residents receive a handmade quilt to use during their stay at Target House. One of the commemorative quilts will be presented to Target House during the volunteer weekend in July, and two quilts will be auctioned off at St. Jude fundraisers throughout the year. The quilts serve as a symbol of continued support, love, and hope to Target House families.

Although a vast majority of Americans think they are prepared for a hurricane or other disaster, a new poll by the American Red Cross showed that most have not taken even the basics steps needed to prepare for a disaster or emergency situation. To help make preparedness easier for families, the American Red Cross has developed a list of tips.

Make a Family Emergency Plan

Talk-Talk to your family about disasters that can happen where you live. Establish responsibilities for each member of the household and work together as a team.

Plan-Plan two places to meet after a disaster, including one right outside your home in case of a house fire and one outside your neighborhood in case you cannot return home.

Learn-Learn how and when to turn off utilities such as electricity, water and gas. Ask someone at the fire department to show you how to use the fire extinguisher in your home.

Tell-Tell everyone in your household where emergency contact information is kept and make copies for each family member. Be sure to identify an out-of-town contact for everyone to call during an emergency to let that person know where they are and how they can be reached.

Practice-Practice your plan at least twice a year. Drive your planned evacuation route. Plan alternative routes on a map in case main roads are impassable or gridlocked.
Check Emergency Preparedness Kit Supplies

Review your family's emergency preparedness kit every six months. If you don't have one, you can get started by going to Target stores or online at Target.com to buy a new First Aid and Emergency Preparedness Starter Kit that contains essential emergency items for a family of four. Created by Target and the American Red Cross, these kits include flashlights, batteries, blankets, a radio, a children's activity book and a First Aid and Emergency Preparedness guide from the American Red Cross, among other necessities. These family-friendly kits cost only $29.99 - of which Target will donate $10 to the American Red Cross.

Plan on storing enough supplies for everyone in your household for at least three days.

Supplement your First Aid and Emergency Preparedness Starter Kit with other essential items such as:
1. One gallon of water per person per day for drinking, cooking and sanitation
2. Non-perishable, high protein foods such as energy bars, peanut butter, and ready-to-eat soup
3. Medications
4. Pet suppliesEditors' note: If you are interested in more tips or photography for an article about emergency preparedness, please contact Elizabeth Bowen at 410.821.8220 or elizabethb@imrecommunications.com
