Team Member Engagement

As one of America's largest corporate philanthropists, volunteerism is at the heart of Target. Since we first opened our doors, Target team members, retirees, family and friends have volunteered millions of hours to community projects. This commitment is part of our legacy.

Volunteerism & Community Support

Target seeks to engage its next generation of leaders and team members at each stage of their career at Target – from recruitment to retirement – by offering timely and relevant volunteerism opportunities. These opportunities include community service recruitment events, ongoing local volunteer opportunities, and retiree programs.

By delivering these relevant opportunities to our team members, we've been able to enable them to make a difference in their communities year-round. With more than 350,000 team members in 49 states, Target has a workforce with the size and geographic spread to make a significant impact on the well-being of the communities we serve.

In 2008, Target is introducing a new signature volunteer program that gives team members nationwide the opportunity to help schools in their local community through a partnership with the Heart of America Foundation and Hands on Network. Target will expand this partnership in 2009, providing volunteer opportunities from donating books and volunteering at local school libraries to complete makeovers utilizing the design and construction expertise of Target’s property development team.

In addition, Target team members continually lend volunteer and financial support to Target House, a long-term housing facility for families of patients receiving life-saving treatments at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and the United Way. In fact, Target consistently ranks among national leaders in dollars contributed to United Way, with volunteering efforts including the preparation of meals for the elderly and homeless, refurbishing and donating used computers, and reading with young people.

To further support and foster volunteerism and the vital work of millions of volunteers who help thousands of communities nationwide, Target serves as the exclusive national sponsor of National Volunteer Week, partnering with Points of Light and Hands on Network.

Pro Bono and Skills-Based Volunteering

Target also provides our specialized business knowledge to our nonprofit partners through a variety of unique pro bono services. Examples of our pro bono service that implement our team’s talent and expertise range from supporting law enforcement agencies through our expertise in forensic services to leveraging our commercial interiors, community relations and technology teams to help the National Domestic Violence Hotline renovate its outdated call center and enhance its telecommunications technology to accommodate deaf and hearing-impaired callers – thus saving more lives.

Target also offers an enhanced board leadership program in an effort to enhance community leadership opportunities for executives across the company and deepen Target’s relationship with key stakeholders in the communities where we do business.
