Backgrounders
Target gives back more than $2 million each week to strengthen families and communities across the country with a focus on education, the arts, social services and other vital community partnerships. A cornerstone of Target’s community commitment is the support of visual art, music, dance, film and design programs.Target sponsors programs of all sizes, both big and small. These programs range from film festivals, and art exhibitions, to music and dance performances and partnerships with local museums, design schools and arts educators, all of which collectively work to bring art out to local communities.
Because design is the foundation that inspires everything at Target, its importance is captured in Target’s “Design for All” philosophy. Great design is more than aesthetics and style—it is about promoting creativity and striving for innovation which leads to extraordinary products, processes and experiences.
Arts Accessibility
Target is committed to making creative experiences more affordable and accessible for families. Working with leading museums Target is able to present free admission programs including current partnerships with The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Asian Art Museum in San Francisco and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
Target also supports the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, which presents free daily performances by renowned artists, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s free summer concert series at regional parks and beaches.
Exhibitions
Target supports a number of art and design exhibitions at leading museums, including the National Design Triennial at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York, and the upcoming Jasper Johns exhibit at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.
Target also is presenting the national tour of Chicano, a two-part contemporary art and multi-media exhibition traveling to 10 cities, which will be on view this summer at the de Young Museum in San Francisco through October 22, 2006.
Emerging Artists
Target works with a wide range of arts organizations that nurture young and emerging artists, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s annual “Music Matters” contest, which provides funding for music education and local school programs. To support new talent in the film industry, Target partners with the Los Angeles Film Festival to present the Target Documentary Award and the Target Filmmaker Award, the largest cash prizes for promising directors bestowed by a North American film festival.
RISD/Target Emerging Designer/Artist Award honors designers and artists who express both aesthetic excellence and good citizenship.
Target also works with arts organizations that partner young people with industry professionals on collaborative projects, such as the Debbie Allen Dance Academy in Culver City, Ca., which presents an annual dance production, and the University of Minnesota’s Design Institute, which offers summer camp programs in design education for teenagers.
